Dadcor Shenanigans

[Yamato woke up abruptly. At first he was very groggy, confused about what exactly made him snap to full awareness so suddenly, so it took him a while to muster the motivation to actually investigate. He opened his eyes, itchy with sleep, and blinked fuzzily past the edge of his bed's blanket.]

...

[Yamato was unimpressed by what he saw]

...Alcor.

[His voice was low and rough with drowsiness, but his irritability was loud and clear. He wriggled down further under his blankets, his hair fanned over his pillow as his eyes drooped down into narrow slits, his eyebrows furrowed slightly]

What are you doing?

[Alcor said nothing, seemingly undeterred by Yamato's disdain of his culinary abilities, and levitated the food (which was on a tray) so that it was on the table one moment, and right under Yamato's nose the next, floating an inch or two above his lap while on the bed. It was a simple breakfast, consisting of small portions of omurice, broiled salmon, miso soup, and green tea.

...But of course, there was also takoyaki.]

Please, eat.

[That was a yes.]

[Yamato gave a long suffering sigh at Alcor's insistence, but, strangely, he didn't upturn the tray, or slink away despite his obvious irritation. Instead he took the tray's side handles, letting it settle properly on his lap]

...hm...

[Close scrutiny revealed that it looked like it was supposed to, and the smell was pleasant. So, visually, it appeared safe for now, with no clear signs of poisoning or tampering. Yamato picked up the chopsticks, letting them hover contemplatively before picking at the salmon.

Cautiously, Yamato ate a small part of it - only to still]

...

[It...]

...

[I-It was delicious...!!!]

[Alcor sat there the entire time, smile apparent on his face, and simply waited for a response. Judging from Yamato's reaction, he prepared it correctly, and properly constructed the food so that it appealed to human senses. That was good. He lifted up a hand, resting his head on it as he leaned in.]

How is it? Is the cuisine to your liking?

...

[Yamato couldn't give Alcor the satisfaction of knowing that he was currently in the throes of delicious-overload. He swallowed the mouthful of salmon, and gave a small sniff, ducking his head to hide his face from view as his continued eating.

The tips of his ears were pink, although that was the only sign of Yamato's embarrassment]

It's satisfactory.

[Alcor, fortunately for Yamato, missed the pinkness of his ears, though he could tell he was pleased. And since the Shining One was pleased, so was Alcor.]

I'm happy to hear that, Shining One.

[There was silence after that, as Yamato ate the breakfast. He did it slowly, actually savouring the taste of the food, instead of eating as quickly as possible to get it over and done with - which was the norm.

After a while, he was done, and he set the chopsticks down on the now empty plate. Not even a crumb remained of the meal, and all that was left was the green tea, which Yamato picked up and began to sip contemplatively]

I'm done. [A pause] Make yourself some tea.

All right.

[That he did. Alcor floated out of the bedroom, and returned with a cup of green tea in hand, though he didn't drink it yet, opting to swirl it around a little when he sat back down on the chair.

Yamato taught him about drinking green tea. He didn't have to, but he did, as huffy or disinterested as he was while doing it. Alcor was grateful for that.]

[Yamato seemed to ignore Alcor for a little bit as he drank his tea, sitting with perfect posture despite the tray resting on his lap. He supposed he was being a bit lazy, having breakfast in bed. He was still in his nightwear, making no move to get up properly and get changed, preparing for the day.

His eyes slid over to his clock beside his bed. It was nearing to reveille, so he had time to move slowly, but, still, it was uncharacteristic of him - and would start bad habits of laziness if Alcor made a habit of this]

It's surprising that you would be such an effective cook. I'm inclined to believe that you didn't use conventional methods...

Believe what you wish. If the results were satisfactory, that is enough for me.

[Alien bullshit magic works pretty well. With modifying things at a molecular level, essentially editing data, he could do a great many things. Destroy humans and demons with a snap of his fingers. But instead...

...He used it to make food delicious.]

Heh, secretive even over mundane things like cooking.

[Yamato's lips twitched briefly into a ghost of a smile before his expression flattened into blankness. He sipped his tea, then grimaced when he realised he had reached the bottom, leaving dregs. He swirled them with a sigh]

What compelled you to do this, though? You say it was curiosity over human taste, but is that really all?

I wanted to make you happy as well.

[Food was a universal thing that could be enjoyed by all humans, from what he saw. Even a Septentrione like him could appreciate food, although it did take some time for him to understand what was "delicious" and what wasn't.]

[Yamato stilled. His head still bowed towards his empty cup, his eyes glanced up to peer at Alcor from beneath his eyelashes, his expression one of mild boredom]

...happy? What nonsense is this now?

Nonsense...? Is it so unexpected?

[At that accusation, Alcor actually looked a bit surprised. Yes...all he wished for was the happiness of others. Humanity. Its will. The happiness and will of the species.

...And if he had to do unsavory things for it, well, he didn't quite care.]

[Yamato lifted his head then, letting a little tutting noise as if exasperated]

I suppose not. You do bizarre things like this with increasing frequency, so it should have been expected.

[But why, was the question. Why was Alcor so intent upon his 'happiness'. Yamato had none. Not to say that he was perpetually depressed or sad, but that he had no use for those kind of emotions, and Alcor's attempts to rouse them was just childish - for an observer of humanity, Alcor's immaturity was...]

I do not understand, at times.

You don't need to.

[What mattered was the result and not the process, for this sort of thing. Alcor didn't expect anyone to understand him, as he couldn't even understand himself, if his identity crisis and occasional existential crises were of any indication. He took a sip of green tea, leaving that statement to hang in the air.]

[Yamato frowned a little, obviously unhappy with this response, but didn't pursue it. Instead he held out his empty cup, giving Alcor an expectant look. Although the guest, Yamato felt that Alcor bummed about his home enough that he had lost whatever privileges guests earn in these situations - which meant he could refill his cup without it being rude]

[Even if he was considered a guest in the Hotsuin family's manor, Alcor didn't mind. After all, he didn't understand human customs and traditions all too well, and wouldn't mind doing that even if he knew. Alcor took the cup in his hands, and floated out of the room to refill it.

A minute later, he was back, cup of green tea in hand...though he offered the wrong cup to Yamato, offering his already-sipped one.

...It should really come as no surprise to anyone that a star was sort of spacey.]

[ .... dat's gross Alker.

Yamato reached out to take the cup - only to pause and narrow his eyes slightly as he studied it. The cups were near identical, but something about it was different enough for Yamato to hesitate for a brief moment before he took the cup without any comment.

There was no thank you of any sort as he lifted it up to his lips, and took a small sip from it. But who would expect manners from him? No one that's who]

It's almost time for reveille.

[Yamato said it very suddenly, turning his head away to look at his bedside clock. Indeed, it was time for him to 'get up', officially, and prepare for the day. He felt oddly lethargic, though]

It is. You should prepare for the day.

[That was what humans did, wasn't it? Alcor took a sip of the green tea previously intended for Yamato, noting not much of a difference aside from temperature. He himself didn't intend to move anytime soon either. Perhaps it was the lethargic mood of the room.]

...

[Yamato silently sighed, setting his cup on the tray still resting on his lap, before gingerly moving said try onto the bed. The cutlery and cup wobbled a little, since it was a somewhat large tray, and he was a very small boy, but he managed to do it without spilling or knocking anything over, and began to scoot off of the bed to begin getting dressed.

He was independent enough to prepare for the day by himself. He could get changed and wash himself without any assistance, and he felt no shame or childish embarrassment in stripping off in front of Alcor either. In fact, he seemed to pay Alcor as much attention as a plant pot, with how he bustled about his room without looking at him - albeit bustling in a very slow, lazy fashion (for him, anyway)]

[That was fine, because Alcor, leaving Yamato to his own devices, paid no attention to the latter in return, opting to sip "his" green tea instead. At one point though, he did put down the cup to make a comment.]

I presume this is what humans call a "slow day".

[Alcor was observant, and although the passage of time he observed could be considered strange to normal humans, he could notice the change in demeanor and speed, even if it was a small one. Maybe it had something to do with giving him food in bed...?]

I'm not being slow.

[Although Yamato's tone was even and calm, there was a slight edge of irritability there at the implication of him being 'slow'. At this point, Yamato was standing in the middle of his room, dressed in his very plain kimono with a small, ivory comb in his hand. He was dragging it methodically through his hair, although the tufts right at the back sprung right back up no matter how many times he dragged the comb through it]

Moreso than usual.

[Siiiiiiip. Perhaps Yamato should ask for a different haircut at the family salon one day.]

Tch.

[Yamato lowered the comb, and the way he fidgeted with it spoke volumes of how he wanted to toss it at Alcor's head. He refrained, however, and turned away from the other being with a quiet sniff]

It's because you have disrupted my usual pattern this morning with your foolishness, that's all.

I'll take care not to disrupt it any further, from now on.

[So unappreciative of his cooking. How rude. But in all seriousness, if Yamato didn't want it, Alcor was fine with that, albeit a little hurt because hey, he did put in that effort to understand the composition of "deliciousness" and human taste.]

[Of course, Yamato was oblivious of the hurt he had delivered... and even if he had known, he wouldn't've cared either. Done with the final touch ups, Yamato turned back to Alcor and tilted his chin up slightly]

Are you accompanying me for the day?

[Alcor let out a sigh.]

...No. I have my own matters to attend to.

[...Such as watching over humanity. Besides, Yamato was capable on his own, especially so since he was raised in such a way. (Alcor's fault.) Even if Alcor did see him as a child, while nobody else did.]

Very well then. I will keep the board set up later this evening if you have the inclination to play.

[Their chess matches had been happening with increasing frequency, but it was something Yamato didn't mind. He had been devouring his studies with efficient hunger, and he was outstripping his tutors with each passing week - to the point where he managed most of his own lessons by self-study at this point. Why did he even have tutors anymore? Useless]

Of course.

[He never failed to show up, when the time for a chess game came. It was fascinating, that game of wits, and Alcor enjoyed playing with him, very much so. In a blink of an eye, he simply disappeared, out of sight and out of mind.]
